Down In The Fields
(Carleen McCornack)
Right after Christmas to start the new year,
We’d travel the roads not far from here
Out to the countryside lined with the woods
Where the green tempers gray, where the giant trees stood.
The fields are blankets of green
With ribbons of winter streams
The hawks on the fenceposts turn towards the sun
And the lambies are down in the fields.
Born in a meadow still white with snow
In a wind off the mountains, 30 below
But soon they’ll be up and off running along
With spring at their heels making them strong
[chorus]
At the turn of the season the darkness gives way
To cold clear blue mornings when lambs love to play
They race through the fields with their tails in the air
With mama not far, they haven’t a care.
[chorus]
The hawks on the fenceposts turn towards the sun
And the lambies are down in the fields.
